Murray State College Connor tabbed as new women’s soccer coach

Murray State College has announced the hiring of the men's soccer coach, John Connor, to also lead MSC's women's program. This decision comes after the recent resignation of Gary Akin as their head coach.

Connor has previous women's coaching experience, including one year as a volunteer coach for the Lady Aggies in 2017, in which he helped the team advance to the second round of the playoffs. He spent three years as women's assistant coach and head recruiter at East Central University before being named both the girls' and boys' soccer head coach at Ardmore High School. In just one year, he guided both teams to their first-ever playoff appearance in school history.

"It's always exciting to take on a new opportunity, and this will be a good challenge taking on this additional role as women's coach," Connor said. "It's not really a job when you love what you do, and I love coaching soccer."

Having coached women's teams before, Connor is looking forward to doing it again. He knows time management will be key, as it's important for him to focus on one team at a time.

Connor, who is a Murray State alum and native of Spain, was named the men's head coach in 2021 and has helped lead the team to an overall record of 14-9-2 in two seasons. The Aggies finished 8-2-2 in the 2021 season, and then 6-7 in the 2022 season.

"The accomplishments of the men's soccer team are a credit to John's dedication to his players," said Dr. Tim Faltyn, Murray State College president. "His work ethic and attention to detail are one of the many reasons for the team's success on and off the field. I have no doubt that he will continue to do great things with the women's team."
