Murray State College teams up with Scott Robertson as the shooting sports coach.
Robertson is one of the most accomplished sporting clay shooters in the history of shooting sports. He has 38 years of experience in sporting clays and 42 years of competition experience. Robertson has won state, national and world championships in multiple disciplines during his 35-year professional career.
He has been named to 56 All-American teams during his career. Robertson is a member of the Texas State Sporting Clay Association and National Sporting Clay Association hall of fames.
“My grandpa and my dad were both trap shooting champions,” said Robertson. “My grandpa was a military skeet shooting coach in Guam. My dad was a professional coach and coach of the Olympic sports festival team and shot on the United States Air Force shooting team.”
You can certainly say that Robertson was born into the sport, along with his son, Clay, who is a student in the Murray State gunsmithing program.
Robertson’s goal is to make the Murray State shooting sports team a national championship team. “We are going to build a gun-friendly environment with a world class training facility,” he says. “I want to help create a program for students that will outlive all of us. My main objective is to teach students how to compete, not just how to shoot, and become champions.”
Murray State College’s Police Chief Sam Holt was last year’s coach and led the team to the 2022 Collegiate Clay Target Championship in San Antonio, Texas. This was the first year of competition for the team.
“Getting to learn from Scott is an opportunity of a lifetime,” said Holt. “Not many kids get to do this. They are excited for the adventure that awaits them.”
This is a chapter moment for Murray State College – a chance to innovate and change the program.
“We want to provide the students with the confidence and skills for them to be successful,” said Dr. Tim Faltyn, Murray State College president. “We believe in and want to invest in them so that they can be their best.”
Robertson and his family own Elm Fork Shooting Sports in Dallas, Texas, and Side X Side Ranch in Wynnewood, Oklahoma.
