Amid increasing threats and instability, House Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole led a bipartisan delegation to the Middle East. The mission aimed to strengthen America's defense and reinforce partnerships with allies. Cole, along with other representatives, met with leaders from Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Israel to discuss ongoing conflicts involving Iran’s proxies and mutual objectives for regional peace and security.
The delegation included House Appropriations Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro and Representatives John Rutherford, Ed Case, and Mark Alford. They engaged in high-level meetings with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, King Abdullah II of Jordan, and Saudi officials. Discussions focused on reinforcing strategic alliances and increasing regional cooperation for global security.
"Diplomacy is crucial to protecting American interests around the world," stated the group. They emphasized deepening engagement through these visits as a key objective to bolster peace during challenging times.
In Israel, the delegation reiterated the strong bond between the United States and its ally. Meetings were held with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Foreign Minister Israel Katz. Briefings covered military operations, efforts to rescue hostages including Americans, and activities of groups like Hamas and Hezbollah linked to Iran.
A year after a deadly attack on Jewish people since the Holocaust, members visited Mount Herzl in Israel to honor stories of heroism and tragedy. On behalf of the U.S. House of Representatives, they laid a wreath at the cemetery in remembrance.
The trip concluded with a visit to officers aboard a U.S. warship in the eastern Mediterranean. These sailors are recognized for their dangerous work defending America and its allies.
