Washington, DC - Representative Tom Cole of Oklahoma's 4th District has expressed his condolences following the death of former President Jimmy Carter. In a statement, Cole acknowledged their political differences but praised Carter's personal qualities.

"Jimmy Carter and I never agreed on partisan politics. However, while I opposed Jimmy Carter politically, I never questioned his decency, his character, or his patriotism," said Cole. He went on to commend Carter's "personal integrity," "sheer decency," "deep and sincere religious faith," and "obvious patriotism."

Cole recalled a remark by his late mother, who was a state legislator during Carter's presidency. She described him as a "Good man, wrong job" in response to a reporter asking about her reaction to Carter’s 'malaise' speech.

Despite differing views on Carter's presidency and politics, Cole emphasized the importance of honoring him for his faith, character, patriotism, and global human rights advocacy throughout his life.

Cole concluded by extending sympathy to the Carter family and those who admired him: “I extend my sincere sympathy to the Carter family, to his many talented staffers who remain with us, and to his admirers and fans. Jimmy Carter led an extraordinary life and he loved America. That alone is a worthy legacy for any man.”
