Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after the House Republicans advanced H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act of 2023. If signed into law, this legislation would provide for the resources and direction necessary to secure the border including resuming border wall construction, giving border patrol agents necessary resources, equipment and manpower, reforming fraud and abuse in the asylum process, preventing catch and release practices and establishing new penalties for visa overstays.
“President Joe Biden’s southern border is a chaotic scene of his own making,” said Cole. “His administration’s open border agenda has caused the southern border to degenerate into a national security and humanitarian crisis of unprecedented proportions. An open border is anything but kind or compassionate as it empowers drug cartels and human traffickers, and allows fentanyl and illicit drugs to flow into our communities. And it has become a path utilized by terror suspects to try and sneak into our homeland. This bill is a complete rejection of President Biden’s border policies and purposeful inaction, and I was certainly proud to support its passage to uphold our constitutional obligation to keep Americans safe.”
Earlier this week, Cole made extensive remarks on the legislation in a Rules Committee meeting. Video here and transcript here.
