Congressman Tom Cole of Oklahoma expressed his condolences following the death of Wes Watkins. Watkins, a prominent political figure from Stillwater, Oklahoma, had a distinguished career in Congress. He notably served on the Appropriations Committee and the Ways and Means Committee.
Cole remarked, “Wes was a remarkable man and had a brilliant career in Congress.” Watkins' political journey was unique as he served first as a Democrat from 1977 to 1991, later as a Republican from 1997 to 2003. His involvement in politics also included time as a State Senator in the 1970s and two campaigns for governor in 1990 and 1994, during which he ran as a Democrat and then an Independent.
Even after political competition with former Governor Frank Keating, Watkins was nominated for a cabinet-level position. While the Democratic-controlled State Senate did not confirm this nomination, Watkins successfully regained his congressional seat as a Republican shortly after.
Watkins held the singular distinction in Oklahoma history of winning a congressional seat as a Democrat, as an Independent in his 1994 gubernatorial race, and finally as a Republican. Cole credits Watkins’ electoral success with symbolizing Oklahoma’s political evolution.
Cole stated, “I was privileged to serve as Wes’ lead political consultant in his final three congressional campaigns.” He praised Watkins as an effective campaigner and committed public servant, whose work was recognized statewide.
Although Watkins switched political parties, Cole emphasized his unwavering political principles and dedication to public service. Watkins was fondly remembered for his devotion to his family, the people of Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State University.
Cole also remembered Lou Watkins, Wes Watkins' wife, as his "soulmate and cherished partner." Reflecting on Watkins’ legacy, Cole noted, “I will miss my friend Wes. The people of Oklahoma will miss him more.”
Extending his sympathies, Cole concluded by stating, "Oklahoma has lost one of its favorite sons." He directed condolences towards Lou Watkins, their children, grandchildren, and all who admired Wes Watkins.
