Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed a series of legislative items to support law enforcement during National Police Week.

“The men and women in our nation who wear a blue uniform selflessly serve their own communities knowing the dangers of their profession,” said Cole. “Unfortunately, in recent years, anti-law enforcement and ‘defund the police’ rhetoric has resulted in spikes in crime in many cities across the nation and even violence against law enforcement officers. I was proud to support these bills and a resolution to support and honor all those who uphold the badge and put themselves in harm’s way to protect others.”

Legislation passed in the House this week includes H.R. 2494, the POLICE Act of 2023, which would make assaulting a law enforcement officer a deportable offense and H.R. 3091, the Federal Law Enforcement Service Weapon Purchase Act, to allow federal law enforcement officers in good standing to purchase their service weapon when that weapon is being retired. In addition, the House passed H. Con. Res. 40, a resolution expressing congressional support for law enforcement officers and opposing efforts to defund, disband, dismantle or abolish the police.

Earlier this week, Cole made extensive remarks on these legislative items in a Rules Committee meeting.
