Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 467, the HALT Fentanyl Act. If signed into law, this legislation would permanently list all fentanyl-related substances on Schedule One of the Controlled Substances Act and ensures these illicit drugs are off our streets.

“The fentanyl crisis in the United States, which has been exacerbated by a porous southern border, has stolen thousands of futures in just a few short years and is now the leading cause of death in Americans aged 18 to 45,” said Cole. “While drug cartels take advantage of the Biden Administration’s open border policies, this legislation takes concrete steps to protect Americans during this public health crisis by commonsense and necessary changes and providing law enforcement the tools they need to stop fentanyl-related substances from entering our nation. I was proud to support its passage.”

Earlier this week, Cole made extensive remarks on the legislation in a Rules Committee hearing.
