Congressman Tom Cole, Chairman of the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations Subcommittee, expressed his satisfaction after the THUD Appropriations Act passed the House as part of a six-bill appropriations package. Cole stated, “This legislation is a huge win for the American people, and I am very happy to see the THUD appropriations package pass the House floor today.”
The bill includes several key provisions aimed at improving various aspects of transportation, housing, and urban development. It cuts billions from programs that were deemed overfunded and rejects additional requests from the Biden Administration. Essential funding is allocated to the FAA for airspace safety, and support is secured for rail and highway safety programs to reduce accidents.
Additionally, the bill maintains housing assistance for vulnerable citizens, limits the regulatory agenda, and supports homeless assistance programs. Funds are also prohibited from being used for certain specific purposes related to transportation regulations.
In terms of Congressman Cole's priorities and provisions for Oklahoma, the bill includes significant funding for air traffic control operations, facilities, and equipment. The Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center is fully funded, with additional provisions for training facilities and vertiports. Support is also provided for the Tribal Transportation program, with additional funds for Native American housing and transportation programs.
Specifically for Native American communities, the bill includes allocations for housing block grants, loan guarantee programs, Tribal HUD-VASH vouchers, and Counter-UAS research. These provisions mark historic gains in traditionally underfunded areas and demonstrate a commitment to supporting the needs of Native American populations.
