Congressman Tom Cole of Oklahoma expressed his condolences following the passing of Representative Raul Grijalva from Arizona. Despite their political differences, with Grijalva being a "proud progressive Democrat" and Cole identifying as a "stout conservative Republican," the two found common ground on issues related to tribal sovereignty.
Cole noted, “I was sad to learn of the passing of my colleague and friend, Raul Grijalva of Arizona. Raul and I disagreed on almost everything... However, there was one topic where Raul and I did agree and worked together seamlessly. We were both fierce defenders of Indian Country."
Their collaboration spanned many years, particularly during Grijalva's tenure as chair of the National Resource Committee. Cole remarked on this partnership: “Raul and I collaborated on tribal issues for many years, especially when he chaired the National Resource Committee, which has the most jurisdiction over Native American issues than any other committee in the House.”
In his statement, Cole praised Grijalva's legislative approach: “Raul took his legislative responsibilities seriously. He was a knowledgeable, principled, and pragmatic lawmaker." Reflecting on their work together and personal friendship, Cole added that he would miss Grijalva "as a partner on Indian issues" and extended his sympathies to Grijalva’s family and supporters.
